the blog, for the past three years, had been an outlet of my emotions (plus rantings), thoughts, and most importantly, of some of my works (poetry, essays). since my ideas come as bursts that are gone after sleeping it through the night, the blog serves as the blank paper, with the keyboard as the pen and ink. blogging keeps my blood pressure low, since it serves as a shock absorber of what i think (and feel).
for others, a good blog can be a source of ideas to fuel their minds. good and responsible blogs could even bring about the change that we (me and my friends) long for.
topics of racism and hatred being publicly posted in blogs are some of its disadvantages. since blogging is not restricted in any way (as far as i know), it is possible that spreading the wrong notions on other people, things, and events (but not limited to these) could be triggered by blogs.
I use my blog as an avenue for me to express myself. For me, it is a great way of letting out my feelings because I get to rant or rave on anything I wish to. However, I screen what I want others to see. Sometimes, I make an entry for the sake of expressing my thoughts and not let my feelings build up. Such entries are only for my private viewing. I don't let others see it because i don't want people to get offended or hurt.
Another advantage for me is that blogs are used by my friend and i as ways of informing each other of what's happening since we don't get to see each other that often. It is our form of updating each other of our lives.
Negatives: I've encountered blogs that bash other people. I believe this is a disadvantage of blogging since bloggers believe that they can say or write anything they want because it's their own space. However, people do view those sites and people get hurt. Some take it too personally. It degrades the esteem/confidence of people.
i think the advantages of blogs are that they bring out the tapped or untapped writer in each one of us. it serves as another avenue to express one's ideas, emotions, opinions, etc. it can also show another side of yourself that you haven't revealed before (bec blogging can give u a degree of anonymity)...personally, blogging has helped me keep in touch with what's happening in my friends' lives especially those that i haven't caught up with often
a disadvantage is that some feel that they could air everything without even an attempt of censoring (in a good sense) themselves...it can also become a source of gossip for other people and can mislead others with the wrong kind of information...
personally, i blog not only because i want to share my insights but because i want to write and i want to improve my writing.
i remember the quote of Annie Dillard on The Writing Life, "The impulse to keep to yourself what you have learned is not only shameful, it is also destructive. Anything you do not give freely and abudantly becomes lost to you."
aside from improving one's writing, one also gains a lot of insights from other people who comment on your entries. i do learn a lot from blogging. i get to learn different points of views and perspectives from different people. they give ideas and tips on various subject matters.
for the dangers, blogs could be used against you. so there is really a need to be responsible and prudent on blogging. just like the cliched lines, "anything you say may be used against you." there is a need to be careful on what we write. we may offend others. we may hurt them or bash certain groups since there could be instances when we generalize.
a blog is a more techie form of a diary which, for most people including myself, serves as an outlet for emotions - good or bad. it is also an interesting way of keeping in touch with people you don't see much and at least have the feeling of still knowing what is going on with them...
the danger is that a blog is too public that anyone can have access to one's ideas and private lives. although anonymity can be preserved, some people use this mistakenly by nosing into other people's lives or by using blogs to do not-so-good stuff.
